Authors: Nakamura, Fábio Yuzo; Ramos, Ana; Clemente, Filipe Manuel; Afonso, José
Abstract: Training periodization has reached an almost mythical status in sport: little is questioned whether the definition of a temporal organization and sequence of contents rigidly followed leads to superior sports performance
than that resulting from non-periodized strategies, especially in team sports. This is a paradigm that urgently should be changed. The ability to change direction is an example of a complex motor skill, with multi pie determining factors ( e.g., technique, linear sprint speed, anthropometry, reactive strength, concentric strength and power, and muscle imbalances), which is associated with the injury risk during its execution (e.g., knee), and can be analyzed in detail in mechanical terms ( e.g., braking and propulsion forces in contacts with the ground). Each individual presents different combinations of strengths and weaknesses during qualitative (technical) and quantitative assessments in change of direction tests. Thus, it makes little sense that everyone should practice in the sarne way and follow the sarne temporal sequence of contents (i.e., periodization). ln opposition, the proposal is that the assessments provide information for training programs about this and other capacities, and that training shows which are the most important assessments to be carried out at that moment There should not exist rigid tralning periodization structures, but instead flexibility depending on individual and collective needs.

Authors: Ramos, Ana; Loureiro, Manuel; Nakamura, Fábio Yuzo; Coutinho, Patrícia; Ribeiro, João; Clemente, Filipe Manuel; Mesquita, Isabel; Afonso, José
Abstract: Based on the concepts, discussions and criticisms previously presented, this chapter alms to: (i) explore, from a methodological point of view, how it is possible to empirically investigate the continuous and bidirectional interaction between planning and assessment; and (ii) examine, in detail, the baniers and opportunities inherent to this type of studies. The bidirectional feedback between planning-assessment is exposed from a theoretical
perspective to a practical understanding. Thus, it is presented an innovative design capable of operationalising the ideas presented throughout this book. Such design includes the building of randomized contrast groups and the use of assessment instruments, like the Game Performance Anaiysis System (GPAI), which can be adapted over time depending on what is pianned on a daily basls. Furthermore, given the need to interpret the context, longitudinal investlgations are suggested, as change implies time, as well as the use of interpretive approaches, since there is an urgent need to understand the reason behind the change. Finally, the barriers and opportunities that this type of lnvestigation entails are presented and debated. A final reflection hlghllghts the quality of information coming from this renewed research model and, ln consequence, the added value it provides to enrich the pedagogical process in the most diverse educational contexts.

Authors: Clemente, Filipe Manuel; Bessa, Cristiana; Vieira, Gabriel; Ramos, Ana
Abstract: This chapter aims to share a reflective view on the relevance of assessment from the perspective of inter- and intra-individual variability. At the sarne time, the frequency of the evaluation and its adequacy to the contents will be discussed. The chapter begins with a simplistic deconstruction of inter- and intra-individual variability concepts and how their complexity accentuates the challenge of programming and planning. Subsequently, the periodicity of the evaluations is debated according to the time and resource limitations inherent to any pedagogical intervention. Also, in this section, an attempt will be made to discuss how the contents may govem the periodicity. Finally, a reflection on the rhythms and ways of evaluating is shared.
