This report provides a critical overview of the training program developed as part of the Professional Internship for the master’s degree in Rehabilitation Nursing, which focuses on providing specialized care to patients with cardiorespiratory, neurological and orthopedic-traumatological conditions. The program enables the consolidation of theoretical and practical knowledge, essential for specialized professional practice in Rehabilitation Nursing (RN), integrating the common competencies of the specialist nurse with the specific competencies of the Specialist Nurse in Rehabilitation Nursing.
The internship took place in a hospital setting, within the Respiratory Rehabilitation, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Traumatology departments, and in a community setting, within the Integrated Continuing Care Team, at three Local Health Units in the northern part of the country. Patients with acute and chronic conditions were monitored, including those with functional deficits, dependence on activities of daily living, and a need for rehabilitation given their current health status.
The RN’s intervention, integrated into the multidisciplinary team, focused on providing holistic, high-quality care through a systematic functional assessment and the implementation of individualized rehabilitation programs aimed at maximizing functionality, promoting autonomy, and empowering the patient and family for an effective transition in the health-illness process. The therapeutic relationship established, based on empathy, partnership, and active listening, proved to be crucial for adherence to the rehabilitation process and for achieving health gains.
In parallel with the practical component, a scoping review was conducted to map the available scientific evidence regarding “Rehabilitation programs for fatigue management in cancer patients,” allowing for the deepening of knowledge, the identification of gaps in the available evidence, and the reinforcement of the relevance of evidence-based practice in the planning and implementation of rehabilitation care.
In summary, this report reflects a journey of personal and professional development, grounded in the acquisition of scientific, technical, ethical, and interpersonal skills, demonstrating the role of the EEER as a central element in clinical decision-making in response to the complex needs of patients and their families across various healthcare settings.

Simultaneamente, o trabalho de investigação reforça a pertinência da prevenção de quedas em contexto oncológico e a necessidade de investir em intervenções e programas de reabilitação mais estruturados, seguros e ajustados às necessidades desta população.; This Master's Thesis in Rehabilitation Nursing aims to critically and thoroughly demonstrate the training path developed throughout the professional internship, simultaneously, integrating research focused on fall prevention in an oncological context and a critical reflection on the development of the competencies of the Specialist Nurse in Rehabilitation Nursing.
The document is organized into three complementary chapters. The first chapter is dedicated to the training path in Rehabilitation Nursing, assuming falls in adults as a cross-cutting axis of intervention. In this context, the different contexts of clinical practice, the intervention developed, and the contribution of these experiences to the understanding of falls as a multifactorial problem, with a significant impact on the functionality, autonomy, safety, and quality of life of the person, are analyzed.
The second chapter corresponds to the research work, developed in the form of a Scoping Review, according to the methodology of the Joanna Briggs Institute, with the objective of mapping the scientific evidence on rehabilitation nursing programs in the prevention of falls in adults with oncological disease.
The third chapter presents a critical reflection on the development of the competencies of the Specialist Nurse in Rehabilitation Nursing, highlighting the progressive consolidation of common and specific competencies throughout the clinical and research journey. This analysis made it possible to make visible the construction of a specialized, autonomous, ethical, reflective practice supported by scientific evidence.
In summary, the report shows that the training path contributed to the development of a more conscious, critical and confident professional identity, reinforcing the relevance of the EEER's intervention in promoting the functionality, autonomy and quality of life of the person. Simultaneously, the research work reinforces the relevance of fall prevention in an oncological context and the need to invest in more structured, safe and tailored rehabilitation interventions and programs to meet the needs of this population.

Metacognitive training (MCT-Silver) for older adults with depressive symptoms in Portugal: a pilot study

Title: Metacognitive training (MCT-Silver) for older adults with depressive symptoms in Portugal: a pilot study
Authors: Silva, Celso; Alves, Elisabete; Schneider, Brooke C.; Sampaio, Francisco; Morgado, Bruno; Santos, Bruno M.; Correia, Tânia Sofia Pereira; Coelho, Joana; Tomaz, Mónica Lopo; Ferreira, Rogério; Fonseca, César; Pinho, Lara
Abstract: Purpose Depressive symptoms in older adults represent a significant concern with major life impact. This uncontrolled pilot
study evaluated the safety, feasibility and acceptance of metacognitive training for depression in later life (MCT-Silver)
among Portuguese older adults. MCT-Silver is an 8-week psychological group intervention targeting (meta)cognitive beliefs
to reduce depressive symptoms. The study also assessed changes in depressive symptoms, metacognitive beliefs, quality of
life, ruminative responses, self-esteem, and dysfunctional attitudes.
Methods A pilot, uncontrolled, single-group study with twenty-nine participants aged≥60 years without cognitive impairment and beck depression inventory-II (BDI-II) scores≥14 were included. Blinded assessments occurred at baseline and
post-intervention using patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) (depression), metacognitions questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30)
(metacognitive beliefs), world health organization quality of life instruments-Bref, item 1 (WHOQOL-Bref) (quality of life),
ruminative responses scale (RRS-10) (ruminative responses), Rosenberg self-esteem scale (RSE) (self-esteem), and dysfunctional attitudes scale-18B (DAS-18B) (dysfunctional attitudes). Acceptance was assessed with a 21-item questionnaire.
Results Participants attended an average of 6 sessions (75%) and evaluated the intervention very positively, indicating
they found it to be useful in daily life and fun. We did not receive any negative responses. Pre-post comparisons showed
statistically significant changes in depressive symptoms, metacognitive beliefs, quality of life, rumination, self-esteem and
dysfunctional attitudes; however, given the uncontrolled design, these findings should be interpreted as preliminary and
exploratory rather than as evidence of efficacy.
Conclusions Results of this uncontrolled single-group pilot study are encouraging, indicating safety, and feasibility of
administration as well as high adherence and acceptance among Portuguese older adults. Given the uncontrolled singlegroup design, the observed pre-post improvements in clinical outcomes should not be interpreted as evidence of efficacy.
Controlled studies are needed to confirm the efficacy of MCT-Silver in this population.

Emotional management, empathy and emotional intelligence in mental health nursing: Educational insights from a scoping review

Title: Emotional management, empathy and emotional intelligence in mental health nursing: Educational insights from a scoping review
Authors: Moreira, Maria Teresa; Lima, Andreia; Ferreira, Salomé; Fernandes, Carla
Abstract: Aim: To map the existing evidence on emotional management strategies used by mental health nurses and
explore implications for education, curriculum and clinical practice.
Background: Emotional competence is a component of mental health nursing, where nurses are frequently
exposed to emotionally complex and demanding interactions. Despite its relevance, evidence remains fragmented regarding how emotional management strategies can inform the education and preparation of mental
health nurses.
Design: Scoping review.
Methods: The review was conducted following the JBI methodology and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Searches were
conducted in MEDLINE, CINAHL and PsycINFO from 2015 to 2024. Studies addressing emotional management
strategies among mental health nurses were included. Data were charted and synthesised using thematic
analysis.
Results: Five studies from Portugal, Canada and the United States met the inclusion criteria. Four key themes
were identified: (1) emotional management as a foundational professional competence; (2) education for
emotional intelligence through structured training and reflective practice; (3) empathy as central to therapeutic
engagement; and (4) self-awareness as a prerequisite for effective emotional regulation. Strategies such as
clinical supervision, emotional intelligence training and reflective learning were associated with improved
communication, personalised care, increased professional confidence and reduced burnout.
Conclusion: Integrating the development of emotional competence into nursing education through structured
learning, reflective pedagogies and supervised clinical experiences may enhance resilience, relational competence and preparedness for mental health nursing practice.
Implications for Practice: Embedding emotional intelligence, empathy and self-awareness within nursing curricula
can strengthen students’ emotional preparedness, promote wellbeing and support sustainable mental health
nursing practice across diverse care settings
