This thesis aims to evaluate the applicability of remote sensing, geographic information systems and forest inventory in determining the leaf area index (LAI) in stands of pine. The study took place in the region of Minho Lima, where 35 circular inventory plots of 500m2 were settled, to collect the dendrometric variables of the stands and measure the leaf area index, with a ceptometer. The images used were taken by Landsat 7 ETM+ and Terra satellite with MODIS in order to explore the spectral characteristics recorded by these sensors (individual bands and vegetation indices) for the indirect determination of the LAI. The coordinates of the plots, raised by global positioning system, along with the satellite images, were entered into a geographic information system (GIS), which made the required processing of remote sensing and GIS analysis. Multiple regression models were adjusted by the method of least squares to estimate LAI, as independent variables dendrometric parameters and spectral variables extracted from satellite images. Equations were established to estimate the basal area (G), the trade volume (V) and biomass (Bt), the independent variable LAI. Statistical adjustment showed a moderate to good quality adjustment for the estimation of LAI from stand variables: G (R2aj = 0.685, syx = 15.7%), V (R2aj = 0.635, syx = 15.7%), Bt (R2aj = 0.637, syx = 15.7%), used individually, and Acp (crown area) and N (number of trees per hectare), combined (R2aj = 0.870, syx = 9.4%). The adjusted equations to estimate G, V and Bt have a similar predictive ability, from the IAF (R2aj = 0.685, syx = 23.5%; R2aj = 0.635, syx = 25.9% and R2aj = 0.637, syx = 24.7%; respectively). The correlations observed between LAI and the spectral information extracted from ETM+ images were negligible and the MODIS did not observe any correlation, so there is no set equation to determine the LAI with these independent variables. The comparison of the models developed in this work with equations established by other authors to estimate LAI in stands of pine, confirmed the good predictive ability, and maladjustment in applying, in this region, some models suitable for other locations. Finally, the estimates produced by the developed models were compared with MOD15A2 products, which show the Leaf Area Index map globally, at a resolution of 1km x 1km, showing that these products are not useful for studies at local level, with a very stratified and scattered landscape in different soil coverage, as it is the case of our study area.
