Human suffering is an experience that can be related to most of the achievements and experiences throughout life. In turn, the disease is a major cause of suffering, as it reaches deeper structures psychoaffective and spiritual life of the human being. The nurse is the team member who most closely, and longer lives with the suffering person's end of life and his family. Concomitantly, and the result of this interaction, the suffering of the nurse is a reality.Bearing in mind this fact, we consider important to conduct the study whose goal is to understand the suffering of the nurses who take care of person at the end of life and their family, in order to identify the strategies developed by professionals to mitigate the suffering, in order to better care for themselves and others. We chose a qualitative research with a descriptive, exploratory and data collection was done through a semistructured interview with nurses, from a service of internment in the “IPO Porto“.The results reinforce that the suffering of the nurse is an emerging reality of care of the person at the end of life and his family. As manifestations of their suffering, nurses experience many emotions and feelings usually positive and negative. They recognize a set of difficulties which potentiate their suffering, focusing on the patient and family, the multidisciplinary team, the organization and himself. To overcome these difficulties, they develop different strategies, that help them to deal with their suffering and thereby improve their performance as individuals and professionals, promoting the well-being of the person at the end of life and their family. Despite the suffering proves to be an uncomfortable experience, nurses recognize that this may also be an opportunity for development and personal and professional growth.Acknowledge the suffering of the nurse as a multidimensional phenomenon, and at the same time, reflecting that the quality of care provided is fundamental, as it is primordial that nurses take care of themselves to better take care of others. Institutions should also have a working knowledge of this reality, namely the strategies available to help professionals to deal with their suffering. Only in this way, it will be possible to join efforts to reach the goal desired by all, the excellence of the care provided to the person at the end of life and their family.
