Plano de interpretação dos Caminhos de Santiago no centro histórico de Barcelos

Abstract

This dissertation aims to present an interpretation plan for the historical routes of the Camino de Santiago in the Historic Center of Barcelos. Interpretation is an educational activity, which aims to reveal meanings and relationships through the use of original objects, by firsthand experience and by illustrative media, rather than simply to communicate factual information. This plan aims to identify and interpret these historical Jacobean routes in Barcelos and their contribution to its birth, its heritage and traditions related to the Legend of the Cock. Barcelos was a cross of several roads, before the Jacobean pilgrimage started, in the 9th Century. However, in the Middle Ages, it became a key waypoint for all Jacobean pilgrims, specially, after the construction of the Gothic bridge, in the 14th Century. To this dissertation, it was carried out a detailed reading on the existing literature about heritage interpretation, Jacobean routes and the city of Barcelos. A survey was undertaken, focused on its visitors profile and their motivations to visit this town. It presents an overview of this research and describes its main goal and specific objectives. Results suggest that its visitors’ profile and motivations belong to the cultural tourism segment, justifying the opportunity of implementing this interpretation plan.

Esta dissertação tem como objetivo principal apresentar um plano de interpretação das rotas históricas dos Caminhos de Santiago no Centro Histórico de Barcelos. A interpretação é uma atividade educacional, que visa revelar significados e relações através do uso de objetos originais, experiências em primeira mão e por meios ilustrativos, em vez de comunicar, simplesmente, informações factuais. Este plano tem como objectivo identificar e interpretar essas rotas históricas jacobeias em Barcelos, a contribuição para a sua génese, o seu património e as suas tradições relacionadas com a Lenda do Galo. Barcelos foi um cruzamento de várias estradas medievais, antes do início das peregrinações jacobeias, no século IX. No entanto, na Idade Média, chegou a ser um ponto de passagem crucial para todos os peregrinos a Santiago, especialmente, após a construção da ponte gótica, no século XIV. Para esta dissertação, foi realizada uma leitura detalhada da literatura existente sobre a interpretação, as rotas jacobeias e a cidade de Barcelos. A pesquisa foi realizada, com enfoque no perfil dos seus visitantes e nas suas motivações para visitar esta cidade. Apresenta-se uma visão geral da pesquisa e descreve-se o seu objectivo principal e os objectivos específicos. Os resultados sugerem que o perfil dos seus visitantes e as suas motivações pertencem ao segmento do turismo cultural, justificando a pertinência para implementar este plano interpretação.
