Abstract: O internamento numa Unidade de Cuidados Intensivos constitui um evento inesperado que envolve repercussões não só a nível individual, como familiar. Desta forma, é fundamental que o enfermeiro percecione a família da pessoa em situação crítica como alvo dos seus cuidados, compreendendo-a no seu todo e identificando as suas necessidades, através do estabelecimento de uma relação terapêutica, baseada numa comunicação eficaz. O processo de comunicação constitui, assim, um elemento essencial do cuidado de enfermagem à família, no ambiente intensivo, não só pela sua importância na relação terapêutica estabelecida, como pelo facto de constituir um favorável indicador da qualidade e humanização dos cuidados prestados. Face a esta problemática pretendemos compreender o processo de comunicação enfermeiro-família, em contexto de cuidados intensivos, de modo a contribuir para uma melhor intervenção nesse âmbito. Neste sentido, desenvolvemos um estudo qualitativo, de caráter exploratório, descritivo e com características fenomenológicas. A recolha de dados foi realizada através da observação participante e da entrevista semi-estruturada, dirigidas a um grupo de enfermeiros e familiares de uma Unidade de Cuidados Intensivos de um hospital central da região norte. Os dados obtidos foram analisados com recurso à análise de conteúdo. Dos resultados obtidos emergiram as seguintes conclusões: o enfermeiro comunica com a família do doente utilizando a comunicação verbal e não-verbal e através de atitudes comunicacionais; o âmbito da informação proporcionada pelos enfermeiros vai de encontro às necessidades de informação sentidas pela família, a qual tem uma opinião positiva acerca da informação transmitida, considerando a linguagem utilizada pelo enfermeiro bastante percetível; a comunicação não-verbal e as atitudes comunicacionais do enfermeiro, bem como o conteúdo da informação proporcionada constituem os aspetos considerados significativos no processo de comunicação enfermeiro-família; e existem diversos fatores que interferem, de forma positiva e negativa, no processo de comunicação enfermeiro-família, os quais se relacionam com o familiar, com o enfermeiro e com a dinâmica do serviço.
The admission in an Intensive Care Unit is an unexpected event which affectsnot only the patient but also his family. Therefore is essential have the patients' family as subject of nursing care. Nurses might perceive the family as a whole, identifying their needs through the establishment of a therapeutic relationship, based on an efficient communication. Thereby, the process of communication represents a main element of the nursing care towards the family in a intensive care environment, not only for its relevance during the therapeutic relationshipbut also being a favourable indicative of the quality and humanization of the care. In light of this subject we aim atunderstandingthe nurse-familycommunication processinserted in critical care, in order to contribute for a improved nursing intervention in that field. Thus, we have conducted a qualitative study, with exploratory, descriptive and phenomenological design. The data collection was held by participant observation and a semi structured interview, appliedto a group of nurses and relativesof a Critical Care Unit in the Northern Region Central Hospital. The data obtained were analyzed byanalysis of content.
