Considering that professional satisfaction in nursing is an indicator of the quality of care provided to the patients, and of the assessment of the performance from the organizations that are currently in a remodeling stage in Portugal, it was our interest to assess the Professional Satisfaction of Rehabilitation Nurses, from public institutions in the Northern region of the country. The construct of professional satisfaction that guided this research is intrinsically related to the way the individual feels in his working place and to his personal characteristics. The goals of this study consisted in: knowing the conditioning factors of the rehabilitation nurses’ satisfaction, studying the influence of the area of care provided in the professional satisfaction of rehabilitation nurses, and analyzing the influence of socio-demographic and professional characteristics in the perception of the professional satisfaction of rehabilitation nurses. Thus, i tis a quantitative study, of an exploratory nature, descriptive and correlational. The sample was constituted by 60 nurses, exerting their functions in hospitals (47) and ACES (13). To assess their degree of professional satisfaction, we used the Instrument of Assessment of Professional Satisfaction (IASP, 5th version). Open questions were treated using content analysis, following a logic of complementarity between the quantitative and qualitative paradigms. In the inferential analysis we used the Student t test, or Unifactorial Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). When conditions for the use of these tests were not met, Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used instead. No significant differences were found between specialists and specialized nurses, in terms of professional satisfaction. The differences found were related to the participants’ sex. Differences were found in the quality of work place scale (p =2,26), human resources politics subscale (p=2,24) and coordination level facet (p=2,88). In what concerns the work place, participants who provided care in the context of primary healthcare showed more satisfaction. Regarding the open questions, remuneration not adequate to the function carried out, lack of recognition of the value of work, lack of visibility of the work carried out by the rehabilitation nurse and providing general care were some of the more salient aspects.
