In a globalized world, where the processes of cultural exchange are widening and intensifying, and specific, individual identities are multiplying, awareness of self and the other tends to blur. Multiculturalism, increasingly evident in today‟s world, requires an education system that not only provides students with greater self-awareness, but also a consciousness of their cultural environment and the different realities of the world in which they live. Teachers are required to develop new teaching methods and strategies which are compatible with the principles of inclusive education, and which will lead to improved student performance. In the face of these demands, educators are obliged to consider a number of questions. As an art education teacher, I felt challenged to find answers to the following questions: a) how to approach the concept of identity within the subject of Visual and Technological Art Education? b) reflecting on the concept of identity, could pupils have a better understanding of self and the other? c) if teachers know their students better, can this knowledge contribute to putting into practice the principles of inclusive education? These questions form the basis of this study, whose main aims were to use photography as an artistic resource, and assess new teaching strategies for Visual and Technological Art Education which, in line with the principles of a proposal for a multicultural and inclusive art education, would lead to a deeper understanding of the concept of identity. The investigation encompassed a review of national and international literature about identity, inclusive education, a multicultural approach to teaching art, and photography as an artistic practice. The study was qualitative, and was undertaken using action research, following Elliot‟s model. A curricular adjustment was made to the Visual and Technological Art Education course, offered to a class of 5 th graders at the Middle and High school of Briteiros. The educational intervention took place through the project “Discovering identity through photography”, which explored the use of photography at home and school. Data were collected through participant observation, questionnaires and video recordings, field notes, audiovisual recordings, lesson plans and students' productions (photographs and written comments). The records were processed, organized and systematized, and were subsequently compared and subjected to an interpretive analysis, according to the triangulation technique. The results demonstrated that it is possible to deal with the concept of identity in Visual and Technological Art Education. The project helped the students understand the concept of identity, broaden the knowledge they have of themselves and share this knowledge with others, as well as learn to consider difference as positive; the project also facilitated home / school interactions, and the teachers participating in the research were able to become more familiar with and gain a better understanding of, individual students. The knowledge resulting from this research may be useful to other teachers aiming to solve similar problems, and who are active in schools similar to the one involved in this study.
