Abstract: O presente trabalho pretende estudar um pouco a história de um género musical caboverdiano, a Morna, que – tudo indica – existe desde a primeira metade do século XIX.
The present work aims to study a little the history of capverdian musical genre, Morna, that - it seems - has existed since the first half of the nineteenth century. In this study, we focus our analysis on two others musical genres, namely Fado and Brazilian Choro music, in order to look into aspects that can, eventually, be considered as similarities or dissimilarities among them. We used the qualitative methodology, with ethnographic method, supported in interview techniques, document review, participant observation and questionnaires. The work is structured into 5 chapters. The first consists of an introductory part including issues of research and relevance of the study, the objectives, methodology and structure of the work. The second refers to the Literature Review where we discuss the origins of the three genres under study (Morna, Fado and Chorinho) as well as the musical instruments used in their accompaniments. In the third we make reference to the methodological aspects of research. In the fourth we proceed to the analysis and interpretation of facts and the final chapter presents the conclusion and future prospects that are designed or over which further studies can focus on. We’ve come to the conclusion that there are points of similarity between Morna and Fado, in terms of themes (love, longing, nostalgia, the sea, departure ...), in terms of all the romanticism and lyricism that characterizes them and, in terms of the musical instruments that are used in the accompaniments. Our work did not identify aspects where Chorinho resembles Morna or to Fado. The social contribution of this research is to strengthen the socio-cultural and musical dynamics of the three countries involved, by harboring in its bosom the places related to the emergence and evolution of the three genres of music on which this study focused.
