The importance of communication and language for students learning in the area of Natural Sciences is undeniable and proves crucial to their intellectual and personal development. The interaction with students of a 5th grade class in the educational context in which PES II occurred has shown a general disinterest for the discipline combined with difficulties related to communication and was considered appropriate to study the issue of the use of scientific language in the students oral and written communication. The study was framed by a constructivist paradigm, following a qualitative methodology. Different data collection methods were used: participant observation, field notes, analysis of documents produced by the participants, the questionnaire, the focus group and audio and video recordings. Five tasks were integrated in the planning of the educational intervention, that were related to the pedagogical contents, and incorporate the aspects of oral and written expression, needed for the research. The data analysis revealed the difficulties in the use of scientific language. With respect to oral expression, the students performance wasn’t satisfactory, in the sense that, despite maintaining an active participation, they not always understood the purpose of the discussion and showed trouble to argue and explain their reasoning to colleagues. Regarding the writing, the difficulties were attached mainly to the use of diversified speech connectors, the selection of appropriate action verbs and the use of scientific terms. The focus on verbalization and clarifying the language used has, apparently, allowed to increase the student’s communication skills, since in the last tasks they began to incorporate some scientific terms in their speech, demonstrating understanding though always maintaining a common language.
