This current research study integrates a study called “The (un) fascination of poetry”, and it was carried out by a class in the sixth grade, constituted by fourteen students and had as a main goal to research on the literary preferences of this group of students, that is, to look into whether their preferences lean more to the literary gender of narrative or the literary gender of poetry. Thus, two main goals were defined: i) to understand the main reasons that drive students to choose a certain literary gender; ii) to try to get round the motives that make them not liking that type of text; iii) to develop activities that motivate them to that literary gender. In order for this study to flow, tasks were applied in the educational context itself, which focused on the practice of activities related to the literary gender for which the students showed disinterest and displeasure even, poetry. Thus, the proposed tasks met the planned goals and contributed to the detailed clarification of the reasons that determined their choices. It is, then, possible to assess that the poetic text is portrayed with a lower importance, while comparing it to other literary genders, especially when compared to the narrative, and that this aspect has an influence on the students. Besides this situation, it turns out that the learners feel no motivation or enthusiasm as they get in touch with the poetic speech and, also, lack of knowledge, considering the diverse circumstances that it praises, as a more recreational side of learning. All the work developed consequently managed to deconstruct the students’ disinterests and preconceived ideas as far as the poetic text is concerned, showing them a more dynamic side to it and, also, the diversity of circumstances in which it is present. Even though it is not possible to concretely prove the results, given the short period of action, it was possible to perceive the reasons that determine the choices of the students, as well as the way that the influence weighs on their choices. Thus, this study also points out what must be changed eventually, in order for the students to reach a more enriching and comprehensive learning.
