This study presents an analysis of the relationship between the Pottery Museum in Barcelos and the senior public, in which the tradition of pottery and clay-figurine is disseminated and promoted, and a specific program appropriated to this public is implemented, since 2006. The starting point of this study relates to the awareness of the low attendance of this public. The action research method was selected, as it helped to answer to the need of identifying change, either in the perceptions of the elderly about the Museum’s space and to improve their knowledge about folk art forms, either through action, using data collection tools, as well as observation cycles and the collaborative reflection of all participants. From the methodological point of view, observation, inquiries, interviews, photography and video were used, since they provide background information on cultural mediation, role of partnerships between institutions, exploration of new strategies related to guided visits to the exhibitions and practical activities in the context of the Educational and Entertainment Services of the Pottery Museum in Barcelos. The sample included two Social Centres of Barcelos region. The findings of this action research have shown that the guidelines of the World Health Organization and the new strategies used in this study helped to enhance the knowledge and skills of all participants and they contributed to their enormous motivation and physical and mental well-being. Furthermore, cognitive and social experiences gave voice to each one and facilitated their confrontation with the new challenges involved in this intervention. The conclusions of this study confirm that cultural mediation can be an effective strategy to break with the routines of the elderly, through the transformation of the museum spaces into places of inspiration, learning and fun.
