This study focuses on problem solving and the search for patterns, powerful tasks in the development of the students´ mathematical ability. Its main goal is to analyze the strategies and representations used by students in the exploration of patterns´ tasks and their difficulties, as well as the implications in the development of transversal skills. In order to deepen the understanding of the problem the following questions were set: i) Which role do the students give to the different representations involving patterns exploration? ii) Which strategies do the students use in order to find out patterns? iii) How can we characterize the difficulties they experience with the finding of these new patterns? iv) How can we characterize the contribution of the pattern to the development of the students´ skills? In this study a quality methodology has been used, based on a case study, following two students in the context of the 5th grade. The gathering of data was based upon documents analysis, participating observation, interviews, conversations and field notes. The data analysis allowed to realize that students accomplished certain tasks successfully, showing great enthusiasm when working with patterns. During the resolution of tasks, they always considered the patterns of the problems, also using numerical, and geometrical information. Students used different representations to describe the pattern, which has revealed to be important for its successful resolution. It has been realized that the students´ greatest difficulty was the analysis and the registration of data, as well as the use of different knowledge. They were able to understand and describe the pattern orally, however, they had some difficulty to express it in writing. It was also, evident, that the student´s didn´t always use knowledge previously acquired in their Mathematics lessons to solve the problems. The tasks set allowed the students to apply mathematical concepts emphasizing communication as a way to justify their reasoning.
