A coleção de retratos dos beneméritos da Congregação de Nossa Senhora da Caridade

Abstract

A importância da ação humanitária e social de instituições como a Congregação de Nossa Senhora da Caridade de Viana do Castelo, fundada em 1779, na proteção dos desfavorecidos, aliada a uma certa dimensão religiosa, acabaram por ter repercussões na própria sociedade. Desta forma, foram muitos os homens e mulheres, com posses e sem descendência, que legaram, por testamento, a estas instituições (irmandades, ordens religiosas e misericórdias), muito do seu património e capital, ou mesmo as instituíram como suas herdeiras universais, numa continuidade do que já se tinha passado no séc. XVII. Tornou-se prática comum dentro destas instituições, mandar pintar ou esculpir um retrato dos benfeitores como sinal de reconhecimento pela prestação de serviços e/ou doações que muito contribuíam para a incrementação e desenvolvimento das mesmas. As encomendas dos retratos eram feitas aos “melhores” artistas locais ou das proximidades, muitos desconhecidos e de cariz artesanal, outros de maior prestígio no panorama artístico português. Assim se foram construindo galerias de retratos, como a coleção de pintura existente na Congregação da Caridade, que apresenta exemplares desde os finais do séc. XVIII a meados do séc. XX e se encontra espalhada por salas, corredores e claustros da sede da instituição, com acesso restrito. Ainda que não surgindo com o intuito de serem divulgadas, mas apenas observadas por aqueles que com elas conviviam, estas coleções não deixam de ser um testemunho histórico, cultural e artístico em âmbitos que se circunscrevem à história da cidade, da região e, em alguns aspetos, se inscrevem na história do próprio país. O estudo sobre este conjunto de retratos, mais concretamente sobre os beneméritos e os retratistas, tem como propósito dar a conhecer a coleção ao público da cidade e, em geral, através da criação de um catálogo digital permitindo o acesso a todos os amantes da cultura patrimonial espalhados pelo mundo.

The importance of humanitarian and social action institutions like the Congregação de Nossa Senhora da Caridade de Viana do Castelo, founded in 1779, to protect the disadvantaged people, combined with a certain religious dimension, eventually have an effect on the own society. Thus, there were many men and women, with possessions and without offspring, bequeathed by will, to these institutions (brotherhoods, religious and mercies orders), much of its heritage and capital, or even instituted as his universal heirs, a continuation of what already had happened in the 17th century. It has become common practice within these institutions, to carve or paint a picture of the benefactors as a sign of recognition for services and offers that much contributed to their incrementing and development. The orders of the pictures were made by the "best" local or nearby artists, many unknown of and artisanal nature, others of greater prestige in the Portuguese art scene. So many galleries, were built such as the painting collection existing in the Congregação da Caridade, which has copies since the end of the eighteenth century to the mid of the twentieth century. Which is scattered in rooms, corridors and cloisters of the institution, with restricted access. Although their purpose was not to be divulged but only to be seen by those with whom they lived, these collections are an a historical, cultural and artistic testimony of the areas enclose not only the history of the city, but also of the region even in the history of the country. The study of this portrait set, specifically about the benefactors and portraitists, aims to introduce the collection to the public of the city and, in general, by creating a digital catalog allowing access to all culture lovers around the world.
