The development of a more active lifestyle in old age has been used as a strategy for promoting the improvement of health patterns and quality of life. Although, in developed countries, there is a good channel of communication and of incentive to exercise, an important part of this population has a reduced practice of physical activity. Furthermore, the developed activities are sometimes too infrequent, less than twice a week, without significant benefits to health and quality of life. When intervention programs for this target population are planned, several challenges present themselves. People, each person with its own diverse characteristics, play a unique and with several answers part, making it necessary to vary strategies and create new challenges that promote the success of the intervention. The project “Physical activity for the elderly in Melgaço and cross-border population of As Neves, Arbo, Crecente, Cañiza and Padrenda” (“Atividade Física no idoso de Melgaço e população transfronteiriça de As Neves, Arbo, Crecente, Cañiza e Padrenda”), aims mainly a positively modifying the state of health, both physical and mental, of this population, with implications in the improvement of their quality of life, through physical and sporting activities, programmed and designed according to their characteristics, conditions and necessities. It is also intended that the participation in this program be translated into a more active and dynamic involvement in the community, thus minimizing the social stigma to which elderly living in rural, mountain and isolated environments are often subjected. This project follows a qualitative methodological approach, supported by semi structured interviews, conducted with representatives of some of the most important and influent entities of the geographical area covered by the study. The intervention encompasses sedentary individuals, of both genders, with more than 65 years old, from the Melgaço municipality and from the five other Spanish municipalities (Neves, Arbo, Crecente, Cañiza and Padrenda). The sessions toke place at Centro de Estágios de Melgaço and in the rooms of the selected civil parishes, two times a week, during 60 minutes, where physical activities XV were developed, aiming at working the cardiorespiratory function, flexibility, strength and balance. The program is directed to approximately one hundred and twenty elderly of the several civil parishes of the mountain and at twenty institutionalized people, of both genders, both in Melgaço and the riverside area of the five municipalities of Pontevedra and Orense, closest to Melgaço. The team comprises a sports technician, nurses, a doctor, a psychologist, a nutritionist and assistants that accompany the users of the charitable associations (IPSS). The intention with this group is to develop a work of interdisciplinary partnership (psychology, clinical medicine, physical education, physiotherapy, nursing, nutrition), where each segment contributes to the enrichment and valorization of this initiative, with the application of the specific knowledge of each area. Initially, the participants were referred to the family doctor by the nurses, in order to have permission to practice physical activity. After the execution of questionnaires about the several cognitive components, as well as their pathologies, they were be subjected to a wide set of physical tests as way of diagnostic or initial physical assessment. These tests were be applied in three different assessment moments, to the sample of senior population (institutionalized and non institutionalized) of the municipalities in study: as diagnostic, at the beginning of the year, at the end of a trimester as monitoring assessment and at the end of the year. From a practical point of view, this study offers entities and technicians that work in this area, the advantages of cross-border cooperation and shared management of a physical activity program aimed at the senior population. Furthermore, it offers the whole community, another vision of the elderly and of the practice of physical activity.
