Abstract: | Contexto e objetivo de estudo.
al., 2011), a Escala de Depressão Geriátrica-15 (Pocinho et al., 2009) e o World Health Organization
Quality Of Life - Brief Form (Canavarro et al., 2006).
Background and studies objective. With the growth of longevity, we assist to an enhancement of the scientific and social interest to the elderly population, existing nowadays a big diversity of conceptual frameworks, methodological approaches and investigational results. Given this phenomenon of demographical nature and its interest to society, Social Gerontology emerges, the science that studies the impact of sociocultural conditions and contexts on the aging process and on age, the social consequences of that process and the social actions that can optimize the aging process. The context where the individual resides is important in that affects its capacities and adaptation, being a great helper element or a barrier in life, affecting directly its quality of life. Thus, it appears that the study of the relation person-context is important since the person responds not only to a stimuli and object diffusion on space, but to another person. When there’s no balance between a person and the context, as well as the people that surround him, the person debates himself with a greater predisposition to vulnerability and fragility, which can lead to anxiety feelings and also depression. Viewing the above, establishes the objective of the present work: analyse the relations between social support, anxiety, depression and quality of life of elderly people living on community and on Residential Structures for Elders - Estrutura Residencial para Pessoas Idosas (ERPI). Methodology. This work characterizes itself by being a quantitative, descriptive, and correlational study. The sample is composed by 99 old people, 50 of them being residents on homes of the north region of the country, and 49 living on the community. Relatively to the instruments of data collection the Social Network Brief Scale of Lubben (Ribeiro et al., 2012), the Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (Ribeiro et al., 2011), the Depression Scale-15 (Pocinho et al., 2009), and the World Health Organization Quality of Life – Brief Form (Canavarro et al., 2006) were used. Results. Relatively to sociodemographic characteristics, the home residential group and the community group were equivalent on the distribution on terms of gender, age, civil status, except on schooling. The home residential participants present a higher risk of social isolation than the community group, yet no differences were found regarding the serious anxiety punctuation, and major depressive symptomatology, as well as relatively to the general perception of Quality of Life and all the evaluation domains. |
