Abstract: Contexto e objetivo.
Context and objective. Aging with well-being, quality of life and high functioning is one of the greatest challenges that science and society face due to the increase of longevity (Fernández-Ballesteros, 2009). Individual aging is a multidimensional, multicausal and multidirectional life-span process that holds the historical, cultural and social mark of people’s life contexts (Baltes, Staudinger, & Lindenberger, 1999). Despite the great heterogeneity that characterizes older people and aging, literature identifies different ways of aging, namely (1) normal aging, (2) pathological aging and (3) optimal/successful/active aging (Baltes & Mayer, 1999). Successful aging (SA) relates to an aging with a low probability of disease and disability, where the biological and psychological habilities allow a good adjustment, translating satisfaction with it (Baltes & Baltes, 1990). Successful aging is one of the most researched themes in the last decades within social gerontology, even though there is not a set of criteria commonly accepted to characterize it. From the various definitions defining SA, the broadest is the one proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO, 2002), which adopts the designation of active aging. Concerning successful aging, there are three perspectives that mark the investigation in the domain: (1) Rowe and Kahn’s successful aging criteria (1987; 1998), (2) P. Baltes and M. Baltes’ Selective Optimization with Compensation (SOC) model (1990), and (3) Kahana and Kahana’s Preventive and Corrective Pro-Activity model (1996; 2005). In face of the installed conceptual diversity, in 2009, Fernandéz-Ballesteros, suggests a multidimensional and multilevel reading of successful, active and healthy aging, drawing attention to the conceptions that people, particularly older people, build on this aging optimization process, which he named lay concept. Globally, the research, still initial, about the popular/lay concept of SA suggests that this integrates different dimensions or components, similar to the scientific concept, namely positive levels of health, good cognitive functioning, satisfactory social relationships and satisfaction with life (Ryff, 1989). In this context, the present study aims to understand the concept of SA in the perspective of Portuguese older people. Method. The present study, with a phenomenological nature, encompasses eight older women, aged between 58 and 66, living in the community, all retired and who were primary teachers. The data were collected with a semi structured interview built specifically for the study. Once finished, the interviews were transcripted and their content was subjected to content analysis (Creswell, 2013). Results. The content analysis identified a common theme – The art of aging? that encompasses three domains: (1) Aging: personal dimension; (2) Aging: contextual dimension; and (3) A SA vision, which, in turn, aggregate a variable number of categories and subcategories. Thus, the results show that the participants recognize that (1) there are different aging forms, and in one of them it is possible to keep high physical, cognitive and socioemotional functioning levels; (2) physical, cultural and social environment is important; and (3) a person can intentionally activate resources and strategies in order to age well. Conclusion. The results obtained in this study match the research findings, that is, older people build conceptions about this process that agree with what is conceptually defined, recognize the advantages of successful aging and identify strategies, resources and conditions (personal and contextual) to reach SA. It seems that these results are relevant so that politicians, researchers and professionals in the area can internationalize their action in order to create conditions for people to age successfully.
