Abstract: Contexto e objetivo de estudo. Um dos traços mais evidentes da sociedade portuguesa atual é a tendência para o aumento da longevidade. Assim, assiste-se a um aumento do interesse científico e social em relação à população idosa, existindo atualmente uma grande diversidade de quadros conceptuais, abordagens metodológicas e resultados de investigação. Dado este fenómeno de natureza demográfica e o seu interesse para a sociedade, surge a Gerontologia Social, a ciência que estuda o impacto das condições socioculturais e ambientais no processo de envelhecimento. O ambiente onde o indivíduo reside é importante na medida em que afeta as suas capacidades, sendo um importante elemento facilitador ou uma barreira para a sua vida, afetando assim diretamente a sua autonomia. Quando não existe um envelhecimento saudável, o individuo debate-se com uma maior predisposição para a vulnerabilidade e a fragilidade, podendo levar mesmo associar-se a situações de sintomatologia depressiva. Face ao apresentado, determina-se como objetivo geral do presente trabalho: Analisar a relação entre aspetos sociodemográficos, funcionalidade das atividades da vida diária e sintomatologia depressiva em idosos, a residir em contexto comunitário. Método. Este trabalho caracteriza-se por ser um estudo de natureza quantitativo, descritivo - correlacional. A amostra é composta por 100 idosos a residir na comunidade. Relativamente aos instrumentos de recolha de dados utilizou-se um Questionário Sociodemográfico, o Índice de Barthel (Mahoney & Barthel, 1965; validado e adaptado para a população portuguesa por Sequeira, 2007), o Índice de Lawton (Lawton & Brody, 1969, validado e adaptado para a população portuguesa por Sequeira, 2007) e a Escala de Depressão Geriátrica-15 (validado e adaptado para a população portuguesa por Pocinho, Farate, Dias, Lee & Yesavage (2009). Resultados. Fazem parte deste estudo 100 participantes, maioritariamente do sexo feminino (53%), com uma média de idade de 76,8 anos (dp=8,4). A maioria dos participantes é casada ou vive em união de facto (46,5%) e, apresenta escolaridade reduzida (69,1 % com 1 a 4 anos de escolaridade). No que respeita à capacidade funcional nas ABVD’s 66% dos participantes são independentes e 50% são moderadamente dependentes nas AIVD’s. 63% da amostra apresenta maior sintomatologia depressiva. Conclusão. Constatou-se que maiores níveis de sintomatologia depressiva estão associados a piores resultados na realização das tarefas da vida diária. Mulheres, pessoas mais velhas, com mais elevada escolaridade e solteiras, viúvas ou divorciadas tendem a evidenciar piores resultados.
Background and studies objective. The current Portuguese society is going through a period of aging of the population, due to increased of longevity. This fact has interested the scientific sociology community to find out the cause of this trend. They have used a variety of concepts, different methodological approaches to get the results of research. The impact caused by this demographic phenomenon was so important for general society that made arise the Gerontology as a social science that studies the impact of all social and cultural aspects from the daily in the aging process. The environment where the individuals are living is really important because it can work as a facilitate element or a barrier to their lives and will influence their capacities to live autonomously. When the aging process is not healthy, the person exposed will be more vulnerable for depressive problems. The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze the relationship between social demographic aspects, depressive symptomatology and daily functionalities in elderly people when living in a community environment. Methodology. This work has in its essence a quantity approach, being descriptive and correlational between the data analysed. The methodology used to obtain realistic statistics was completing a social-demographic questionnaire to 100 elderly persons living in community, using the Barthel Activities of Daily Living (ADL) Index (Mahoney & Barthel, 1965; validated and adapted for the Portuguese population by Sequeira, 2007); the Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) Scale (Lawton & Brody, 1969, validated and adapted for the Portuguese population by Sequeira, 2007); and the Geriatric Depression Scale (Validated and adapted for the Portuguese population by Pocinho, Farate, Dias, Lee & Yesavage (2009). Results. The sample consists in 100 elderly persons living in a community-base and/or institutional home cares, mostly female (53%), with an average age of 76.8 years (SD = 8.4). Most of participants are married or cohabiting (46.5%) and have a reduced level of education (69.1% with 1 to 4 years of schooling); Regarding the independence for basic Activities of Daily Living (ADL), 66% are independent and 50% are moderately dependent on the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL). The percentage of individuals that manifested depressive symptomatology was 63%. It was noted that higher levels of depression symptoms are associated to participants with low ability to perform basic tasks of daily living. Conclusion. The result achieved in this dissertation can be the beginning for futures programs to prevent geriatrics diseases as depression, which will help an early detection of symptoms and comorbidities. It is essential that these programs focus the prevention and promotion of mental health, with the goal to improve the life quality and well being of aged people in community.
