Abstract: Contexto e objetivo do estudo.
Context and purpose of the study. Human longevity is one of the greatest achievements of mankind (UN, 2003), however living more years does not mean that they are aging well and with quality of life (Rowland, 2009; Walker & Mollenkopf, 2010). As the years go by it becomes increasingly difficult to achieve a positive balance between gains and losses (Baltes, 1997). In this context, some successful aging models (Baltes & Baltes, 1990; Kahana & Kahana, 1996) see older people as proactive, that they can regulate their quality of life through active involvement in society and use of resources that promote preventive and/or corrective adaptation to the changes and challenges inherent to the aging process. Although lifelong behavior is determinant for aging well, it is fundamental to take into account the characteristics of the person, the place and time in which they live and the resources available in specific territories, since they enhance and limit the aging process itself. In this sense, it is essential to identify the needs, capacities and preferences of old people to draw up appropriate Action Plans. in this sense, it stands out the relevance of Multidimensional Gerontological Assessment in specific places. Given the above, the present study aims to proceed to the Multidimensional Gerontological Assessment in the Municipality of Vila Verde in the sense of draw some guidelines for the Municipal Gerontological Plan. Method. This quantitative study includes a sample of 5% of the old population (aged 65 or more) that live at home in Vila Verde county, stratified in terms of gender and age. This sample is based on the last Population Census (INE, 2011). It was used the Community Needs Assessment Protocol associated with the Population Aging (ANCEPGeroSOC_R, Bastos et al., 2013) to the data collection. Results. The 83 participants in this study have a mean age of 77 years (sd = 7,9), 54,2% are women and 84,3% have less than five years of schooling. The majority of the participants are independent in the basic activities of daily life (94%) but predominantly dependent in the instrumental activities of daily life (54,2%), 15,9% have cognitive deficit, absence of depressive symptomatology (85,5%), high satisfaction with life and low risk of social isolation (7,2%). Statistically significant differences were observed in all dimensions of individual functioning as a function of schooling, with the less schooled performing worse. Regarding gender, statistically significant differences were observed in social networks and depressive symptomatology, with women having worse indicators. In terms of age, there are statistically significant differences in instrumental activities of dalily living, cognitive performance, social networks and depressive symptomatology, and the older ones (80+ years) present worse perform. The analysis of the use and need for community services has shown that, overall, the most dependent participants are those who use more community services, with the exception of social and recreational services, the latter being the services where there is a greater need. Conclusion. The results presented are in line with literature in the field and suggest the need of the Municipal Gerontological Plans to take into account the internal and external resources, since with the longevity the individual capacities reduce, being necessary to allocate resources. This situation is particularly noticeable with the increase in dependence on daily life in the fourth age.
