This report was carried out within the framework of the Supervised Teaching Practice course, the Master’s degree in Pre-School Education and the 1st cycle of Basic Education. The study was carried out in a basic school in the municipality of Barcelos, in a group of the 3rd degree of the 1st cycle. The main goal of the study was to understand the contribution of open problems to student’s performance, to the way they see mathematics and to their ability to communicate. In this way, the chosen means to achieve it was the use of open tasks that were presented to the student’s. To guide the study in the best way, the following questions were posed: (i) How does the solution of the open problems influence the student’s image on mathematics? (ii) What is the degree of student involvement in solving open problems? How is the performance of students faced with open problems? (iii) How does the use of open problems develop student’s ability to communicate? For this study, we followed an interpretive paradigm approach, a qualitative research methodology, and an action-research method. The observation, the mathematical tasks, the field notes and the use of questionnaire direct to students were used to collect data. Open tasks allowed an evolution and improvement of the student’s performance, as much as his/her problem solving and mathematical communication capacity. The main results of the study showed that the resolution of the open problems is a great tool to provide a more active participation of student’s, leading them to reflect on how to solve the problems, to organize thinking and develop mathematical communication.pt_PT
