Abstract: Contexto e objetivo do estudo.
Context and aims of the study. The demographic aging caused by the decrease in the birth rate and the significant increase in life expectancy have implications at the level of social policies (Rosa, 2012). Gerontology is, like Social Gerontology, a multidisciplinary science with a biopsychosocial theoretical basis that focuses on the study of the impact of social, sociocultural and environmental conditions on the aging and old age process, as well as on the social consequences resulting from this process (Fernández- Ballesteros, 2004). Recently, in gerontology, a new area emerged, the gerontotechnology that uses technology to reduce years of morbidity and discomfort, enhancing functional autonomy, extending the years of independent life (Maciel, Pessin, Istoe, & Souza, 2013). In this context, the acceptance and the skills of the elders to deal with the technology is of great relevance, being the object of interest of theorists and researchers. Thus, digital literacy is defined as individuals' awareness, attitude and ability to make appropriate use of digital tools to allow constructive social action (Martin, 2006). In view of the above, this study aims to 1) evaluate the acceptance of technologies in older people; (2) to analyze the association between technology acceptance and successful aging. Method. In the present study, of a quantitative nature, 60 people aged between 50 and 79 years, living in the community, participate. Data were collected using the following instruments: (1) Sociodemographic File; (2) Lawton Index; (3) Lubben Social Brief Scale; (4) Life Satisfaction Scale; (5) Aging Technology Acceptance Scale; (6) Questionnaire on Factors Interfering in the Use of Electronic Devices. Results and conclusion. The participants have a mean age of 63 years (SD = 8,94), 66,7% are women and 41,7% have four years of education. Most of the participants are independent in the instrumental activities of daily living (61,7%), have high satisfaction with life and have a low risk of social isolation (91,7%). Overall, the participants showed low acceptance of technologies (M = 50,30, dp = 14,76), with fear of damaging electronic devices (33,3%), advanced functions (47,7%), and the fact that the technology is not developed for the elderly (50,0%) the main factors that interfere with the use of these devices. The results of the Lubben Social Brief Scale show a weak and statistically significant negative association (p <0,05) with the results of the Aging Technology Acceptance Scale (rs = ,039); the results of the Life Satisfaction Scale are also positively and statistically (p <0,001) associated with the results of the Lubben Social Brief Scale (rs =,014). Finally, we found differences in the acceptance of technologies according to the age of the participants, with the participants in the middle age showing greater acceptance of the technologies and less frequency of the factors that interfere in the use of electronic devices than the participants in the third age. The results presented suggest the need for further studies in gerontotechnology in Portugal, so that can be possible to better understand the reasons that lead the elderly to resist or accept and use the technologies. Based on these evidences it is possible to develop policies, programs, and tools that contribute to digital education and the full inclusion of older people in the technological world so that they can maximize the potential of technology in optimizing and compensating the aging process in order to successful aging.
