Dissertação de Mestrado em Gerontologia Social apresentada na Escola Superior de Educação do Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelopt_PT
Contexto e objetivos do estudo.
Context and objectives. Human aging is a set of biological, psychological and social changes (Sequeira, 2010), being a great achievement of mankind (Sower & Rowe, 2007). Functional capacity is the key to the health of the elderly, integrating the ability to perform in daily life, the capacity to act autonomously and to make decisions (Martínez & Astorga, 2009). For quality of life is referred a set of outcomes of successful aging process, including positive affect, meaning in life, maintenance of productive activities and valued relationships (Kahana & Kahana, 1996). According to the research, social participation/involvement in advanced age is positively associated with performance in the instrumental activities of daily living (Tomioka et al., 2016a, 2017), and being socially active is associated with a better quality of life (Khan & Tahir, 2014). In this context, analyzing functional capacity and quality of life is important for the development and implementation of interventions with the purpose of improving the quality of life of the elderly (Kumar & Majumdar, 2014; Martínez & Astorga, 2009; Sahin et al., 2015). Therefore, it is defined as the objective of this study to analyze the functional capacity and the quality of life of older people participating in Autarchic Intervention Programs/Projects. Method. A total of 104 participants aged 55 years or older took part in this quantitative study, 52 of whom attended the Autarchic Intervention Programs/Projects (PIA group) and 52 didn’t attend (Comparison group). The Comparison group was paired in terms of gender and age group with the PIA group. In the data collection, were used a Sociodemographic and Social Participation Questionnaire, developed for this purpose, the Lawton and Brody Index (Lawton & Brody, 1969; Sequeira, 2010) and the WHOQOL-Bref Scale (WHOQOL-Group, 1998; Canavarro et al., 2010). Results. Of the 104 participants, 80.8% were women, with a mean age of approximately 73 years (M = 72.6, SD = 5.9) and mostly married (61.5%). Regarding the instrumental activities of daily living, when comparing the two groups, no statistically significant differences were observed, with 51.0% of the participants being independent, 49.0% moderately dependent and none severely dependent. In relation to quality of life, there were statistically significant differences between the PIA group and the Comparison group in the general facet (t = 2.366, p = 0.020), with the Comparison group presenting the highest mean value (M = 67.5, SD = 15.9 vs. M = 60.6, SD = 14.1), which may be due to the fact that they also participate in activities, although not included in the municipal programs. There were statistically significant differences in the quality of life in function of the degree of dependence in the environmental domain (F (3.100) = 4.030, p = 0.009), and according to gender in the general facet (F (3.100) = 3.400, p = 0.021). Conclusion. Autarchic programs/projects, and other social activities not included in them, appear to be central in the promotion of quality of life, and perhaps in maintaining the functionality of these elderly people, although there are no significant differences between groups in functional capacity. Thus, it is recommended that elderly maintain an active involvement with life.pt_PT
