Sexualidade e intimidade no processo de envelhecimento: uma perspetiva masculina

Abstract

O envelhecimento é um assunto central na sociedade atual, devido ao crescimento acentuado das gerações mais velhas, em comparação com as mais novas. Assim, as sociedades são desafiadas a adaptar-se às mudanças inerentes a este fenómeno no sentido de responder às necessidades decorrentes. Para compreender o envelhecimento é necessária uma visão biopsicossocial, isto é, uma visão que englobe aspetos da biologia, da psicologia e da área social, bem como, de outras áreas importantes. O envelhecimento humano é, assim, assumido como um processo multidirecional, multidimensional e multicausal (Baltes, Lindenberger & Staudinger, 1998), sendo necessário o constante aprofundamento e questionamento. Neste sentido, ao longo deste processo a pessoa vive ganhos e perdas que a influenciam, dentro do seu contexto de vida. A pessoa tem um papel central no processo de envelhecimento, sendo que existem dimensões que necessitam de maior profundidade. Um dos aspetos pouco explorados na velhice é a sexualidade e intimidade. Neste âmbito existem muitos estereótipos enraizados que necessitam de ser desmitificados. O presente estudo surge da necessidade de analisar as diferentes conceções sobre sexualidade e intimidade ao longo do processo de envelhecimento, bem como, os fatores que influenciam as vivências, realçando a perspetiva das pessoas mais velhas. Desta forma, o objetivo do estudo, de carácter qualitativo, é compreender de que forma a sexualidade e intimidade é percecionada por homens mais velhos. Participam no presente estudo doze pessoas, do género masculino, com sessenta e cinco ou mais anos de idade a viver de forma autónoma na comunidade. Os dados foram recolhidos com recurso a entrevista semiestruturada, construída especificamente para o estudo. A análise do conteúdo das entrevistas permitiu identificar dois domínios: (1) Sexualidade em homens mais velhos e (2) Intimidade em homens mais velhos, sendo cada um constituído por categorias e subcategorias. Globalmente, os resultados demonstraram que a sexualidade e a intimidade são dimensões complementares nas vidas dos participantes, mas dizem respeito a aspetos muito diferentes. As vivências da sexualidade ao longo do processo de envelhecimento são específicas e distintas face a diferentes momentos da vida. Já ao nível intimidade é evidenciada a sua relevância em termos de benefícios nesta fase de específica. Para além disso, os padrões educativos e culturais assim como o estatuto de saúde dos participantes têm bastante impacto nas vivências da sexualidade e da intimidade ao longo de toda a vida adulta, mas em particular na velhice. Por fim, a sexualidade e a intimidade são percebidas pelos participantes como necessidades essenciais para o seu funcionamento e desenvolvimento pessoal, sendo extremamente necessário abordar este tipo de questões, devido ao seu forte impacto no bem-estar individual.

Aging is a central subject in today’s society, due to the crescent growth of older generations compared to younger ones. Thus, societies are challenged to adapt to the changes inherent to this phenomenon in order to respond to the resulting needs. To understand aging is necessary a biopsychosocial approach, that is, a view that encompasses aspects of biology, psychology, and sociology, as well as other important sciences. Human aging is thus assumed to be a multidirectional, multidimensional, and multi-causal process (Baltes, Lindenberger & Staudinger, 1998), requiring constant deepening and questioning. This way, throughout this process the person experiences gains and losses that influence, within their life context. The person has a central role in the aging process, with dimensions that need greater study. One of the aspects poor explored in old age is sexuality and intimacy. In this context, there are many ingrained stereotypes that need to be demystified. The present study arises from the need to analyse the different conceptions about sexuality and intimacy throughout the aging process, as well as the factors that influence the experiences, highlighting the perspective of older people. Thus, the aim of the study, of a qualitative nature, is to understand how sexuality and intimacy is perceived by older men. Twelve men, with sixty-five years or more, living independently in the community participate in this study. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview, built specifically for the study. The content analysis of the interviews made it possible to identify two domains: (1) Sexuality in older men and (2) Intimacy in older men, each being constituted by a variety of categories and subcategories. Overall, the results showed that sexuality and intimacy are dimensions that complement each other in the lives of the participants, but concern to very different aspects. The experiences of sexuality throughout the aging process are specific and distinct in different moments in life. At the intimacy level, its relevance in terms of benefits in this specific phase is highlighted. In addition, the educational and cultural standards as well as the participants health status have a significant impact on the experiences of sexuality and intimacy throughout their adult lives, but particularly in old age. Finally, sexuality and intimacy are perceived by the participants as essential needs for their functioning and personal development, and it is extremely necessary to address these dimensions of human functioning, due to their strong impact on individual well-being.
