A cultura da talha no design de um sistema de jóia em tempos de pandemia

Abstract

Esta dissertação tem como foco o âmbito da joalharia, onde se pretende utilizar duas áreas produtivas distintas uma da outra, a talha dourada e a filigrana. O estudo torna-se pertinente pois cruza duas áreas produtivas de um lugar que arriscam o isolamento ou o desaparecimento, devido às circunstâncias atuais em que vivemos. Neste caso, o designer deve assumir a responsabilidade social de transformar-se num mediador entre duas áreas da cultura do fazer que precisam sobreviver. Além do tema ser atual, é necessário ter em consideração as incertezas que a atual pandemia oferece, em que o design deve agir para ser agente dessa transformação. Como afirma Renato De Fusco (2002), a história do design relata de modo explicito que os momentos de crise – guerras, calamidades, doenças, ditaduras - foram sempre ocasiões que se converteram em oportunidades de projeto. A aplicação de uma metodologia projetual adequada ao contexto na criação de um produto de joalharia, pode levar à determinação de novos produtos, ao aplicar e relacionar valores objetivos que saibam determinar novos cenários de produto (APARO; SOARES, 2012). Com isto, a metodologia que se pretende aplicar é uma metodologia intervencionista e não intervencionista, de base qualitativa. Por um lado, esta investigação apropria-se do conceito de “Design Chão” (DA COSTA, 1998) - que se caracteriza pela utilização de materiais vernaculares e pelo uso de baixa tecnologia como elementos portadores de identidade - para relacionar a cultura da talha dourada com o âmbito da joalharia. Por outro lado, a investigação estimula a ligação entre aquelas como uma ocasião para assegurar a sua sobrevivência e dar uma continuação dos ofícios, através da utilização de tecnologias intermediárias (BONSIEPE cit in APARO & SOARES, 2007). Este cruzamento irá permitir a partilha de saberes entre os próprios artesãos e a criação de um sistema de rede territorial. O estudo ambiciona ser uma mais-valia para a sociedade, que neste momento está a passar por momentos difíceis devido à pandemia do COVID-19, pois irá beneficiar da baixa-tecnologia que qualifica a região do Alto Minho. Neste caso será o trabalho de um entalhador de Paços de Ferreira e o saber de um ourives que trabalha a técnica da filigrana da Póvoa de Lanhoso, permitindo assim a continuação dos ofícios e da produção da joalharia na realidade atual. Além disto, o estudo beneficia de um projeto protocolar com a empresa de joalharia Eugénio Campos Jewels, permitindo desta forma o seu acompanhamento e comprometendo-se ao fornecimento de material para a fase de produção. Com esta ação espera-se qualificar o produto final. Oportunamente, e conforme o desenrolar das circunstâncias, poderão integrar-se outras tecnologias (baixas e/ou altas tecnologias) e processos produtivos. Por fim, esta investigação investe na cultura portuguesa, garantindo que a memória e a identidade do país se perpetuem.

This dissertation focuses on the scope of jewelry, where it is intended to use two production areas that are distinct from each other, the carving and the filigree. This theme becomes pertinent because it crosses two productive areas of a place that risk isolation or disappearance, due to the current circumstances in which we live. In this case, the designer must assume the social responsibility of becoming a mediator between two areas of the culture of doing that need to survive. In addition to the theme being current, it is necessary to consider the uncertainties that the current pandemic offers, in which design must act to be an agent of this transformation. As Renato De Fusco (2002) states, the history of design explicitly reports that moments of crisis – wars, natural disasters, diseases, ictatorships – were always occasions that became project opportunities. The application of a design methodology appropriate to the context in the creation of a jewelry product, can lead to the determination of new products, when applying and relating objective values that know to determine new product scenarios (APARO; SOARES, 2012). With this, the methodology that is intended to be applied is a qualitative based, interventionist and non- interventionist methodology. On the one hand, this investigation appropriates the “Design Chão” (DA COSTA, 1998)- which is characterized using vernacular materials and with the use of low technology as elements that carry identity- to relate the culture of gold carving with the scope of jewelry. On the other hand, the investigation stimulates the connection between those as an occasion to ensure their survival and to give continuation of crafts, using intermediate technologies (BONSIEPE cit in APARO & SOARES, 2007). This crossing will allow the sharing of knowledge between the artisans themselves and the creation of a territorial network system. This study aims to be an asset for society, which is currently going through difficult times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as it will benefit from the fact that low technology is used that qualifies the Alto Minho region. In this case it will be the work of a woodcarver from Paços de Ferreira and the knowledge of a goldsmith who works whit the filigree techniques of Póvoa de Lanhoso, thus allowing the continuation of the crafts and the production of jewelry in the current reality. In addition, the study benefits from a protocol project with the jewelry company Eugénio Campos Jewels, thus allowing its monitoring and the supply of material for the production phase. This action is expected to qualify the final product. In due course, and depending on the circumstances, other technologies (low and/or high technologies) and production processes may be integrated. Finally, this investigation invests in Portuguese culture, ensuring that the country´s memory and identity is perpetuated.
