Volleyball is a highly complex team sport in which technical, tactical, and physical demands intertwine within a highly intense competitive environment. Technical determinants in volleyball play a crucial role in the quality of players' performance, being essential for the effectiveness of both individual and collective actions in competitive settings. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the technical actions of elite athletes participating in the 2023 Men’s European Volleyball Championship. To achieve this, the teams from Group D—comprising France, Romania, Greece, Portugal, Turkey, and Israel—were analyzed during the group stage, totaling 30 matches and 84 athletes (12 setters, 12 opposites, 24 middle blockers, 24 outside hitters, and 11 liberos). A comparison of means for more than two independent variables was carried out using ANOVA (with Tukey’s post-hoc test) to identify significant differences between the independent variables. To calculate effect size, Cohen’s d method was used (d < 0.2 trivial; 0.2 < d ≤ 0.6 small; 0.6 < d ≤ 1.2 moderate; 1.2 < d ≤ 2.0 large; and d ≥ 2.0 very large). Finally, Pearson’s correlation was used for correlation analysis, with the level of significance set at 5% for all analyses. The results showed differences in technical actions between countries, particularly among France, Greece, and Israel, in terms of Attack Effectiveness (55.2%; 30.64%; and 22.92%, respectively) and Aces achieved (3.07; 0.73; and 0.79, respectively) during the competition (p = 0.018 and p = 0.048, respectively). Regarding correlations, a strong positive correlation was found between Errors and Aces (r = 0.725; p < .001), as well as positive correlations between blocking variables and both attack effectiveness and service points (r = 0.512; p = 0.001; r = 0.358; p = 0.001, respectively). These results highlight the importance of offensive actions, particularly attack and service, as performance determinants in elite competitions. |
