The main objective of this study was to evaluate the economic and financial sustainability of organic farming (OF) in the Entre Douro e Minho (EDM) and Galicia regions, respectively in Portugal and Spain, from 2014 to 2023, through a benchmarking exercise applied to indicators at the agricultural company level. The study was based on reference litera-ture on efficiency and economic viability in agriculture, market organization, and sectoral cooperation, which guided the selection of indicators and the results analysis. The economic and financial analysis focused on 18 certified organic production companies, with continuous activity between 2014 and 2023, using annual data from Simplifed Business Information (IES) and the SABI database (Informa D&B). The values were harmonized and deflated according to official indices, and analysed from two complementary perspectives: longitudinal (2014–2023) and cross-sectional (averages 2014–2023 and 2021–2023). The analysis framework integrated eighteen indicators grouped into four dimen-sions: operational efficiency, structure and solvency, economic-financial sustainability, and social sustainability. The interpretative synthesis used an inter-regional and intersectoral SWOT matrix. An overview of regional performance, through the average of the four dimensions of sustainability, reveals a result of 99 points for the EDM compared to a baseline index of 100 in Galicia. This value reflects an overall equivalence between the regions, supported by distinct but viable sustainability structures and strategies. Galicia presented a larger average scale and a strong predominance of livestock farming, reflecting in higher sales and overall labour productivity. In the EDM, the role of private initiative and efficient business management stood out as the main driver of economic and financial resilience, es-pecially in the horticultural and viticultural subsectors, with more favourable margins and higher net profitability per worker. In both regions, a strengthening of the financial autonomy of the agricultural companies analysed was observed, translating into resilience and stability. These patterns are consistent with the differentiation and collective organization strategies identified in the literature. It is concluded that the sustainability of organic agriculture depends not only on scale, but also on sectoral specialization, organizational efficiency, and capital structure. For the EDM (European Development Network), strengthening associative organization, technological modernization, and territorial valorisation are recommended—especially in the fresh vegetable and Vinho Verde (green wine) segments. In Galicia, the consolidation of the livestock sector should be accompanied by greater local valorisation of production and sectoral diversification, in order to reinforce economic resilience and territorial sustainability. The future of organic agriculture in the EDM and Galicia will also depend on the ability to reconcile economic prosperity with environmental and social resilience. Both regions tend towards a consolidation of organic agriculture as a model of sustainable rural development, reconciling profitability, innovation, and ecological preservation. |
