Maize plays a structural role in the dairy basin of Entre Douro e Minho, representing the main forage basis of the intensive livestock production systems that predominate in the region. Its economic and agronomic relevance, combined with the growing need to adapt agricultural systems to the effects of climate change, reinforces the importance of understanding its territorial distribution, the factors conditioning its productive suitability, and its potential evolution under future climate scenarios. In this context, this study aimed to develop an integrated approach to analyse the spatial distribution of maize cultivation in the Entre Douro e Minho dairy basin, identify the main agroecological factors associated with its territorial establishment, and assess the potential evolution of crop suitability under different climate change scenarios. To this end, a methodology was developed based on the integration of remote sensing techniques, geographic information systems and spatial modelling. The identification and mapping of maize growing areas were carried out for the period between 2017 and 2025, using Sentinel-2 imagery and supervised classification methods. In parallel, agroecological suitability was modelled for different maize maturity groups, ranging from FAO 200 to FAO 700, by integrating climatic, physiographic and soil-related variables. A spatial optimisation approach was also applied to the potential distribution of the different FAO groups, using the Multi-Objective Land Allocation (MOLA) model, considering both current and future climate scenarios. The results show a strong spatial persistence of maize cultivation in the region, as well as a close association between its territorial distribution and the main dairy production areas. The comparison between areas estimated through remote sensing and administrative records revealed relevant differences, suggesting limitations in the representativeness of declarative information as an expression of the effective occupation of agricultural land. Regarding agroecological suitability, the future climate scenarios analysed point to a progressive reorganisation of the territorial suitability of maize cultivation, marked by the potential expansion of areas favourable to longer-duration FAO maturity groups. This trend reflects the increase in accumulated thermal availability and may translate into changes in the regional productive configuration. Spatial optimisation also confirmed a tendency towards the territorial expansion of longer crop cycles under future scenarios, reinforcing the possibility of a gradual reconfiguration of maize production systems in the Entre Douro e Minho dairy basin. Overall, this study contributes to a more integrated understanding of the relationship between agriculture, territory and climate change, using the Entre Douro e Minho dairy basin as a reference area. At the same time, it provides both a methodological and applied contribution to support agricultural planning, territorial management and the future adaptation of regional production systems.
