Vegetative propagation of Camellia japonica L. traditionally relies on synthetic auxins, especially indole butyric acid (IBA), a practice incompatible with Regulation (EU) 2018/848, which frames the certified organic farming. The search for biostimulants authorized in organic agriculture (OA) with comparable efficacy is, therefore, a current technical and regulatory need. This work evaluated the effect of four biostimulants, two seaweed extracts (Foralg BMo® and Rizogen®) and two microbial consortia (Kiplant iNmass® and Kiplant AllGrip®), on the rooting of semi-hardwood cuttings of C. japonica, in comparison with a positive control with IBA and a negative control with water, under two irrigation regimes. The trial took place in a heated greenhouse with a mist irrigation system, between October 2025 and January 2026, with a split-plot experimental design, with the main plots having two levels (normal irrigation and ±80% irrigation) and the sub plots, six levels (different rooting promoters), randomized, with three blocks and six cuttings for each treatment. The cuttings were collected in the garden of Casa Tait (Porto) and propagated in Ellepot® paper pots with Siro® Multiplication M056.05 substrate, certified for Organic Farming. IBA (Rhizopon® AA 1%) was the best performing treatment, with 88.3% rooting, although the difference obtained with iNmass and AllGrip was not significant (on average 77.5%). The algae extracts showed unfavorable behaviour, with cutting mortality rates of 42.8% and 16.7% on average, respectively, with Foralg® BMo and Rizogen® (reaching 63.3% and 22.2% under normal irrigation). This result may be related to the alkaline pH value of the formulation (8.5) and its cytokinin activity, which is unfavourable to the root initiation phase. Among the microbial biostimulants, Kiplant iNmass® stood out under deficit irrigation, with an estimated total root length of 13.2 cm/cutting, significantly greater than that observed in the treatment without rooting promoter (3.0 cm/cutting). In addition to the IBA treatments, under the same deficit irrigation regime, Kiplant iNmass® was the only natural product that resulted in larger roots (> 4 cm) and achieved the N2 level for root development, probably due to its concentration of indoleacetic acid. It can be suggested that Kiplant iNmass® applied under deficit irrigation constitutes the most robust biological alternative identified in this study for the propagation of Camellia japonica in organic production, combining significant root development with reduced water consumption in the nursery. This study may contribute to further research on rooting promoters of natural origin aimed at the vegetative propagation of plants.
