It is not by chance that pre-school education is considered essential in the coaching of children. If the main objective is to make the child's school career useful, in that he learns and wants to learn more and better, preschool education provides all these tools. Attending the curiosity (almost innate) of the child through the surrounding environment, it appears that wants to figure all the phenomena implicit in it. The fact that children can see each other, see different colors on the various objects they come in contact with, it becomes pertinent to approach the theme of light phenomena and color, to satisfy curiosity and to answer the most varied doubts of the child. Assuming that the child has knowledge, because it carries with it a baggage equipped with abilities, even if elementary, it becomes relevant to assasy this knowledge in order to guarantee a source of knowledge that is even secure in scientific terms. In this way, the question arises: "How, from the ideas of children on light and color, can scientifically adequate knowledge be obtained? " In order to better structure this study, the following six objectives were rigorously defined: to diagnose children's ideas about light and color; to promote practical activities on luminous phenomena; to promote practical activities on primary and secondary colors; to evaluate the transformation of children's ideas regarding color and light phenomena and identify the practical activities that haveproved to be more suitable. This study was carried out in a kindergarten of the Municipality of Viana do Castelo included in the Grouping of Schools Monte da Ola, where 22 children aged between three and five years participated. It was used a qualitative methodology which were implemented the following data collection instruments: participant observation, investigator´s diary, video recordings, semi-directive interviews and drawings of children. The results show that older children have been able to understand the light phenomena and the color associated with them, however, their responses / verbal explanations show the little scientific character. The younger children, however, acquired some knowledge, although simple, on the light.
